Shareware Copies and Upgrades

Upgrade Note: If you have an older version of Deep Space and have moved up to a computer with a Pentium II chip or clock speeds greater than 250MHz, you need to upgrade to the current version. Older versions of Deep Space will indicate "Error 200". A bug in the compiler used to create Deep Space won't allow it to run on the current generation of faster machines. Version 5.56 fixes this problem.

Installing the Shareware version of Deep Space under Windows 95/98

  1. Find and download dspac556.zip on one of the sites listed below and save the file to a new folder.
  2. Unzip the file using PKZIP, WinZip, or comparable utility. (Click here to download a shareware copy of PKZIP .)
  3. Click the Start button in the bottom left corner of your screen, then click Run. Browse to find the directory you used to save the download file, and run Install.exe.
  4. When the Install routine asks whether you are installing from CD, Diskette, or from Files, select F for Files.
  5. When it asks if you have expanded the two archive files say No.
  6. Answer the remaining questions about your particular system. The program should then install automatically.
  7. If you want to run Deep Space from an icon on the desktop, find Dspace using your Windows Explorer, hold down the right mouse button, drag it to the desktop, and tell it you want to create a shortcut there.

Upgrading a Registered version of Deep Space under Windows 95/98

If you have registered Version 5.5 or later you can upgrade for free.   If you have registered a version from 5.0 up to (but not including) 5.5, you can also download the files and perform the upgrade, but you will need to pay a $15 upgrade fee and get a new registration number.  (To register online go to our secure order form.)  To upgrade:

  1. Find and download dspac556.zip on one of the sites listed below and save the file to a new folder.
  2. Unzip the file using PKZIP, WinZip, or comparable utility. (Click here to download a shareware copy of PKZIP .)
  3. One of the extracted files is named dspace5b.exe.  It is not needed and should be deleted.
  4. Copy the remaining extracted files to a diskette.  (You deleted dspace5b.exe because it would not fit on the diskette.)
  5. Insert the diskette and the original CD into the a: drive and the CD Rom drive, respectively.
  6. Click the Start button in the bottom left corner of your screen, then click Run.   Run a:Install.exe.  (Be sure you run the copy of Install.exe that is on the diskette, not the one on the CD, which is older.)
  7. When the Install routine asks whether you are installing from CD, Diskette, or from Files, select C to install from the CD.  It will install the updated files from the a: drive at the same time.
  8. If you want to run Deep Space from an icon on the desktop, find Dspace using your Windows Explorer, hold down the right mouse button, drag it to the desktop, and tell it you want to create a shortcut there.
