Comet
and Asteroid Data from CBAT/MPC
Now you can get up-to-the-minute
authoritative collections of orbital elements formatted specially for
Deep Space directly from the source . The Central Bureau
for Astronomical Telegrams and the Minor Planet Center has started supporting
a variety of astronomical programs that compute and plot minor planet
and comet data. You can download
text files with elements of currently observable comets and several special
categories of asteroids formatted especially for importing into Deep
Space.
- The files include:
- Currently observable
comets
- Observable critical-list
numbered minor planets
- Observable distant
minor planets (including Centaurs and transneptunians)
- Observable unusual
minor planets (including NEOs)
- Some of these go considerably
fainter than many amateurs will care to go, but you can easily filter
the text files with a text editor before importing them into Deep
Space.
Instructions
- Download
one or more of the files from the CBAT/MPC
web page to your dsfiles subdirectory.
- Run Deep Space
and from the Main Menu select the Ephemeris option.
- When the files of comet
elements are listed type <F1> to import a new text file.
Select one of the text files you have downloaded. The text file will
be converted into a binary .acf file which will be recognized
by Deep Space.
