Deep Space in Print

Deep Space is the most suitable star mapping software available for custom, publication-quality star maps. This is not just an idle boast. Here are some of our end users who have used Deep Space for publication. Check out their work.

We are also aware that quite a few astronomy clubs use Deep Space to produce custom maps for their newsletters. If you use Deep Space in your newsletter or other publication we would like to add your name to our list, including a link if you have a club web site.

No royalty is required for printing star maps produced with Deep Space, but we ask that you be a registered user of the program, and we would appreciate a credit in the publication (preferably with enough detail that an interested person could contact us).

Stephen Smith

Comet Rapid Announcement Service (CRAS) and Shallow Sky Bulletin -- CRAS gives notification of new comets soon after they are discovered. The Shallow Sky Bulletin gives a periodic review of comet activity with other useful information. [No longer in publication.]

Leo Aerts and Luc Vanhoeck

VVS Deep-Sky Atlas -- This is a 300 page atlas with astro photographs, detailed finder charts and extensive commentary on each object printed in Dutch.

DonMachholz MakeWood Products

Messier Marathon Observer's Guide -- a thorough guide to the Messier objects and the subtleties of planning and carrying out a Messier Marathon by one of the originators of the idea. Good use is made of Deep Space's "All Night" maps, showing the western horizon at sunset and evening twilight and the eastern horizon at morning twilight and sunrise. (This feature of Deep Space was originally designed with Messier Marathon planning in mind.) Each Messier object also includes a detailed eyepiece field finder chart.

Don also circulates a newsletter called Comet Comments that is reprinted in many club newsletters. Contact him for details.

Paul Dickson, Saguaro Astronomy Club

SAC's 110 Best of the NGC -- a good list of "Messier Supplements" to help get into deep sky observing on the right foot. After the 110 Messiers, try the next 110 NGC objects recommended by the compilers of the SAC database.

Roger Fell

Telescopic Companion to the Messier Objects -- a workbook for use at the eyepiece featuring 5 charts per page: a 30°, 7th Mag naked eye chart, two 6°, 10th mag. finder charts, with one being mirror reversed, and two 1° (or larger), 12th magnitude "sketch" charts.

David Chandler Company

Deep Space printed the star maps used in all of our printed products: The Night Sky, Exploring the Night Sky with Binoculars, and Sky Atlas for Small Telescopes and Binoculars. In addition to our main product line, we have produced star maps for other companies on contract. Some of these have involved the derivation of some exotic special projections. These include:

  • Star globe gores for Tops Educational Systems.
  • Master charts for producing vacuformed and pad printed transparent projection sky globes for Educational Insights and Exploratoy. Both of these projects involved deriving specially distorted flat map projections to result in distortion-free spheres.
  • Collaboration with Technical Innovations, Inc., the makers of the Home Dome and Pro Dome to allow Deep Space, and other telescope control software, to easily control observatory dome positioning.
  • A star map poster for Duck Soup Promotions, Inc.
  • Eyes on the Skies weekly column in the Tule River Times.

We frequently work with product manufacturers to help them incorporate accurate sky maps into their products. Let us know if you would like us to work with you on a contract basis.
